Monday Book Giveaway (November 15, 2010)

by

Today’s Choose Your Book! winner is … (do you feel suspense yet?) … Amy! She chose Although Of Course You End Up Becoming Yourself: a Road Trip with David Foster Wallace by David Lipsky. Amy, if you’ll send your shipping information to Katrina (at) Stonoff (dot) com, I’ll get your book in the mail for you. Congrats!

For today, I’ve just finished (today) a book most of you have probably already read: A Reliable Wife by Robert Goolrick. I picked it up a thousand times, but I was put off by the very passive weather beginning. Silly me! It’s a stomach-turning, heart-pounding thrill ride of a read. Makes you think a lot about human nature, what is inevitable and what can be changed. Not an easy read, mind you. It’s unsettling and dark. But it’s one of those books that has you up turning pages long after everyone else in the house is snoring.

If you’d like a copy of A Reliable Wife, just comment below and come back next week to see if you’ve won. Contest open to anyone on the planet who has access to reliable mail service. Good luck!

Now, the hat (Kim’s Hat #13):

This is another vintage hat from the collection of the indomitable Kim. It’s made of ivory straw.

It’s deceptively simple. No decoration at all except a tone-on-tone braid along the base of the crown.

However it has a very unusual shape. It’s hard to see in the first picture, but the second picture (after the jump) is clear.

The brim is canted from the crown. It’s off-center, not perpendicular. I’m wearing the hat completely straight — I don’t have it tipped at all. But the brim tips itself when the crown is straight.

I love that the milliner trusted the unusual tilt of the brim to be enough decoration.

These are terrible pictures of me. It was late in the afternoon on an incredibly hot day, and most of my makeup had melted off.

Since I was visiting Kim, I couldn’t coordinate  outfits (plus it was too hot to be changing clothes). Nor did I look at the pictures to make sure I didn’t look like a dork.

And we were trying on a boatload of hats in a short period of time, so I didn’t have time to even look at myself in the mirror and make sure each hat was placed at the best angle. In this picture, for instance, my hair is totally flattened by the crown. If I’d checked a mirror, I would have fluffed it a bit.

So … here’s a chance you’ll rarely have, to see me like you’d see me tooling around doing Mommy Taxi duties. Only wearing a really snazzy hat.

This is one of the books I bought at enormous expense! sometime ago. I was very disappointed in it however and did not finish the book. I think I will go back to it and see how it goes.

I like the angle at which you wear this hat! very jaunty.

    • katrinastonoff Says:

      Really! Disappointed how?

I was surprised how dark it was, but it was compelling enough that I kept going. And it was worth it in the end (though right up to the last page, I wasn’t sure if I was going to like the ending or chuck the book into the nearest stock tank).

Hm, was just perusing this book when I went a-book-hunting this weekend.

BTW, I adore this hat!! Awesome.

    A “stomach-turning, heart-pounding thrill ride of a read”?
Oh, you know everyone will be wanting to read that!

As for the hat, The shape is really unusual, and has a strange effect from straight on, but a little sideways as in the first picture, it’s great!

By the way, I have, finally, read something else (besides Kavalier & Clay) by Michael Chabon.
I think he’s brilliant. how about you?

And the portuguese writers? Are you near the end?

I’ve been interested in this book since I first heard about it, but was put off by the negative reviews. Your recommendation puts it back in the “I need to give this one a try” column. Thanks for the giveaway.

And I like the hat from the first angle, but straight-on it seems to lose its elegance.

    • katrinastonoff Says:

I hadn’t read any reviews, though I knew a lot of my favorite book bloggers read it. I’ll have to go check them out.

Funny thing about this book: I read it for my book club, which was last night. With one exception, we all thought it was a great read/ ride. But the more we talked about it, the less enchanted we were. After a couple of hours picking it apart, we decided it was one of those books that just doesn’t hold up. Fun to read while you’re still in it, but less satisfying the more you think about it. There are, however, a couple of exquisite scenes — extremely powerful, original, compelling writing.

As far as the hat, the straight-on photo is really bad. Overexposed (I tried to correct it a little with P/S, but it was very bad), my hair was flat, etc. Plus, straight-on shots are almost never flattering. So keep in mind that the photo, the pose, and the way I am wearing the hat all contribute to making it look humdrum. The hat, on its own, is really quite stunning.

Thank you very much! I’m very excited about winning this book especially since I’ve almost finished Infinte Jest!

I love that hat on you! It makes me think of a summer day by the water! The angle of the brim is great as it gives it a sense of fun and wit!
