Monday Book Giveaway (September 26, 2010)

by

We have a book to give away! The winner is … (insert a big, dramatic pause for effect) … Llehn! Congratz! She chose from my giveaway shelf The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake by Aimee Bender. Llehn, please send your shipping information to katrina (at) stonoff (dot) com, and I’ll get your book in the mail.

For next week, I have Love in Mid Air by Kim Wright. Despite the title, this is NOT a romance. It’s about a suburban wife and mother whose life is thrown into upheaval when a stranger on an airplane suggests they have an affair.

I heard about it on First Books, author Meg Waite Clayton’s blog about debut novels, and I was sufficiently intrigued to go right out and special order it. I loved the book. It raised a lot of questions about why women stay in stale marriages, and what it takes sometimes to actually leave one.

To enter the giveaway, just comment below and come back next week to see if you’ve won. Contest open to anyone on the planet who has access to reliable mail service (one entry per IP address, please). Good luck!

Now, today’s hat (Kim’s Hat #11):

Linda B. wanted more vintage hats, so … here ya go, Linda! This is another of Kim’s, and as you can see, it’s very simple. Just netting with a velvet ribbon attached.

I would have thought the color would make my skin look sallow, but it doesn’t at all. I kind of like this one, especially with the sunflower in the background.

It reminds me of one of my vintage hats. Here, I’ll post the picture again, so you can compare them.

The only real difference (other than color) is that mine has three smaller velvet bows and a strip of ribbon rather than just the one big bow. Ironically, the pink one really does make my skin look sallow.

When I dug up this photo, I remembered that I was only showing the hats at first until you guys convinced me to post pics of me wearing them. If/when I run out of new hats, I might go back and post pictures of me wearing those first nine hats.

Thank you for this book. I too like the first hat! is this one which would be worn to more formal functions?

I suspect it dates from the 1950s, and women wore hats any time they went out — church, shopping, restaurant, a friends for lunch. I don’t think it’s a formal hat, per se, like you’d wear to a wedding or a dance or even a cocktail party. They just dressed up more all the time than we do.

Hmm I’m not so keen on affairs as a solution to marital problems but then I’m happily married so I can’t judge.

  19. JHS Says:

Your pink hat looks like the hat that one of my best friends wore to my wedding. She paid $.25 for it at GoodWill. My mother never quite got over it! But as the years go by, I love looking at the photos of her in that hat more and more!
