Two winners this week, and both got to choose their books! Congratulations, Oregon Sunshine and Melanie L.! Oregon Sunshine chose Mini Farming: Self-Sufficiency on 1/4 Acre by Brett L. Markham, and Melanie L. chose The Angel’s Game by Carlos Ruiz Zafon. Oregon and Melanie, please send your shipping information to katrina (at) stonoff (dot) com, and I’ll get your books into the mail.
For next week, I’m offering my copy of Yes, My Darling Daughter by Margaret Leroy. It’s a thrilling mystery about a single mother whose daughter sees a photograph of a place she’s never been and says, “I lived there. Before.” If you’d like to read it, just comment below and come back next week to see if you’ve won.
Contest open to anyone, anywhere, who has access to reliable mail service, but one entry per IP address please.
Now, today’s hat (Kim’s Hat #7):
I didn’t like this one at all when I first saw it. I thought it looked like a 1950s shower cap.
Then I put it on, and you can see the big grin that came over my face. I love this look!
It’s like something Phyllis Diller would have worn. Heck, maybe she did.
And you know she was a fun gal!

It does look like a hat Phyllis Diller would wear but it’s actually charming.
I am throwing my name in the hat this week, I think Yes, My Darling Daughter sounds intriguing.
Thanks for the chance.

Now that is a beaut! absolutely gorgeous!!!!!
As usual throw my name in the hat!!!

Did not recognized who Phyllis Diller has I was reading, but I checked the Wikipedia and remembered seeing her.
I like her extravangant persona.
As for your hat, it is nice, but not one of my favorite.
Oh, and for the book, if it is being compared to Daphne du Maurier, it can’t be bad. So, sign me up.
PS – I started on Sea Captain’s Wife during August, but had other affaires and left the book at the house where I stay for holidays.
It’s one more year until I finish the book!
Silly me!
August 31, 2010 at 9:22 am
I’d say Daphne du Maurier is a little more literary than this book. But the story is similar to something she would have written.
How sad about Sea Captain’s Wife! But perhaps whoever is at the house will enjoy it. We always leave a book at the cabin where we stay because the owners are real book lovers too. Both of them always read the book and write us a note afterward. This year, we left Come, Thou Tortoise, but I could have left Sea Captain’s Wife also. Funny — they’re both Canadian books.
September 1, 2010 at 3:27 am
Oh, don’t worry, the book will still be there.
The house belongs to my parents, so I know the book will be there.
But I found a very nice pub there run by an english fellow who has hundreds of books there that traveller’s (especially english, of course) can take home and then return or trade by some other books they bring with them.
This way no one needs to carry a lot of weight!
I managed to trade two books there and got “The Corrections” (Jonathan Franzen) and Smilla’s Sense of Snow Miss Smilla’s Feeling for Snow (Peter Høeg).
I have been wanting to read the first one for ages and the second one looks really good!
They are there with Sea Captain’s Wife waiting for me. Next year I won’t carry
PS – I read Angelica (Arthur Phillips) during my hollidays. Don’t know if you know the book but I highly recommend it!
September 2, 2010 at 8:45 am
Too fun! The pub sounds great.
And you really scored! Both of those books are fantastic! Are they typical for what he had? I would have expected a more mainstream selection, like Da Vinci Code and James Patterson.
Angelica sounds interesting. I’ll have to look for it.

They just about have everything!
Wilbur Smith, chick-lit and tons of thrillers (I suppose people just think they are beach reading…)
People just leave everything there, but I have a very determined eye for choosing my books, so I went for the best.
Of course, a lot of the books are in a very used state, but if you can go over that, you have a whole lot to read!
September 2, 2010 at 10:51 am
Why am I not surprised?
Of course you have a determined eye. And you picked a couple of real winners!
I don’t mind a used state, especially if it’s a book I’m planning to leave behind anyway. I think I’d love that pub!
September 5, 2010 at 2:18 pm
I do hope so!
Franzen I was very curious about him for a while and this recent fuss on “Freedom: a Novel” is even more appealing.
The time he takes on each novel is amazing to say the least and he is a determined writer seemingly deserving so many awards. I just want to delight on that!
(Now, my english reading is not as fast as my portuguese reading and it’s a real big book… Maybe I will still go for the portuguese translation? Have to think it over. But I’ve got another year to do that!)
I am more picky on the state of the books. If they are too read, with the binding crossed several times, I mind a little bit.
It’s not comfortable on the hand an overused book if it wasn’t me to do it. It’s someone else’s pacing and way of reading.
Feels a bit awkward.
But I know I am like that and the people I lend books to know it as well!
I have offered books that were read and a little bit mistreated by friends… and then bought new versions!

OMG, that does look like Phyllis Diller on tour with Bob Hope. Guess that means I’m old because I remember the tv specials showing them entertaining the troops in Viet Nam. I think the male soldiers loved Phyllis Diller as much as the hot chicks that used to parade around the stage.
And yes, I want to read the book!
