Happy Monday! Especially happy, this week, for Andrea who wins her choice: Undead and Unwelcome by MaryJanice Davidson. Please send your shipping information to katrina (at) stonoff (dot) com, and your book will be on its way!
In the relative chaos that’s been going on on this side of the blog, it’s been weeks since I’ve gotten to show off a hat! This week we’re returning to tradition, and Andrea’s name was drawn from a hat like a real winner’s should be. In fact, Aime’s hat is perfect for drawing numbers … deep and roomy, knit and floppy, and as Aime describes it, “very Portland.”
For next week, we’ll be choosing two winners who will get their choice of the books below, used at the WRW Retreat that kept me so sleep deprived last week. Anyone can win, just comment with the book you’d like to win and check back next week to see if you’ve won.
Novels:
- Big Numbers by Jack Getze (first of the Austin Carr mysteries: hilarious & suspenseful)
- Would-Be Witch by Kimberly Frost (fun, suspenseful paranormal)
- The Mark of the Demon by Diana Rowland (paranormal — I’ll be giving away more copies of this one after it’s released.)
- Obedience by Will Lavender (fascinating book of suspense)
- David and Max by Gary Provost and Gail Provost Stockwell (children’s)
Books about Writing:
- Seven Steps on the Writers Path by Nancy Pickard
- Hooked by Les Edgerton
- 100 Ways to Improve Your Writing by Gary Provost

Wow what a great selection, do I need to post a post for each book?
Okay I will…this post “Obedience”.
Thanks so much,

Darby, you don’t need to post separately for each book. Just decide which one you want most, and if you win, you’ll get your choice. I’m keeping all my books, so I’ll be buying these new, which means both winners could choose the same book if they want.
Hope this makes sense! I’m going to delete the rest of your comments, just to clean up the comment string. But you’re definitely entered for the contest, and you can always decide later which book you want.

Hi,
my first time here, came by way of ‘west of mars’ -
what I’d really be interested in is to know what each of the fiction books was supposed to be an example of at the writing retreat! I have to ask these questions of others since my childcare situation (i.e. lack thereof) will not allow me to attend such a retreat anytime soon.
In case I’m lucky – I’d be interested in any of the writing books you think would be most useful for an aspiring comedy writer, or else ‘Big Numbers’.
Nice hat, BTW.
June 10, 2009 at 6:28 pm
Maya, welcome! We LOVE West of Mars around here. Anybody who promotes books is a friend of ours. Heck, anyone who loves them is.
Gosh, I’m not sure I remember. I’ll have to look through my notes. I do remember some specifics — like that Jason used the first scene from Nancy Pickard’s Virgin of Small Plains to show how a character’s goal drives a scene forward, and how that goal not being resolved can set up the next scene. But that wasn’t one of the books I bought for the retreat (I already owned it — it’s a great book!).
June 9, 2009 at 12:46 pm
I would love a chance to win Mark of the Demon!
Hope you had a great time at the retreat!
Cheers,

Katrina? Is this you? I stopped over at West of Mars, where Google told me my book was being given away, but WOM said here is where I had to go. Fun to see people wanting to read my novel, and I hate to disappoint them. How about I send you another five copies of BIG NUMBERS for this great giveway?
Send me an PO Box or address, I’ll ship them right away.
June 12, 2009 at 9:32 am
Jack, I never turn down books to give to my readers. But let’s give them away in a separate giveaway. That’ll give me a chance to tell my readers a little more about Austin Carr and your droll humor. For this one, I’ll buy the book the winner chooses.
Everybody else: come back the first week in July for one of FIVE chances to win this hilarious book!
June 10, 2009 at 6:48 pm
