Monday Book Giveaway (February 9, 2009)

by

Time for a new winner: S. Krishna! S. Krishna chose The Pluto Files by Neil Degrasse Tyson. Congratulations! If you’ll send your shipping information to katrina (at) stonoff (dot) com, I’ll get your book on its way to you!

sweet

Now, for this week … OH! OH! OH! Remember I said it was killing me to decide whether to go to Keri’s CD release concert in Minneapolis or go to the Panama Hotel in Seattle and see Jamie Ford, the author of The Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet?

I made the responsible choice to stay home to take care of my children (well, to stay in Washington and see Jamie Ford rather than fly to Minneapolis). Sometimes, the fates reward you for doing the right thing.

I was working away on my manuscript today when I got an email from my local bookseller. Jamie Ford had called to say he was going to stop in while enroute from Seattle to Portland. I brought in two copies — one for me and one for you — and he signed them both.

Best of all, I got to meet both Jamie and his lovely wife Leesha. We had a delightful half hour or so talking about writing, books, and how they met (it’s a very sweet story: they met in a library and he proposed in a bookstore — how apropos is that?!). They couldn’t be nicer people. Genuine and warm and wonderful. I was already a big fan of The Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet, but now I’m a lifelong fan of both Jamie and Leesha too.

(Updated) Even better, Tuesday I saw Ford speak at the historic Panama Hotel, the hotel mentioned in the title, and he signed TWO COPIES with the date and note, “Panama Hotel.”

So, for next week, I have TWO autographed copies of The Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet by Jamie Ford to give away! The author’s website says Hotel is definitely going to a second printing, so this autographed, first edition should be highly collectible, especially since it was signed at the Panama.

To win an autographed copy of The Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet, comment below before noonish Sunday. Then come back Monday to see if I’ve pulled your name from one of my hats. Contest open to anyone on the planet who has access to reliable mail service. Good luck!

You can read my review of the book here.

Now, Hat #36.

hat36

This hat isn’t conducive to drawing winners from because the veiling is rather fragile, so I chose S. Krishna at random.

This was one of the abandoned hats I adopted on ebay. I’m sure it’s vintage, though it doesn’t have a label, so I know nothing about it.

It’s made of cloth-wrapped wire with silk flowers and netting. I don’t wear it often, but when I do, I usually tuck the veil underneath and wear it as a headband.

The picture stinks because I don’t have PhotoShop on my loaner computer, but at least you can see the hat!

Edited to add information about the books I’ve giving away.

Pretty hat, though I agree – drawing names out of it would’ve been horrendous! That’s great that you ended up seeing Jamie Ford and his wife – you have an informant at your local bookstore???

Please sign me up! I am aching for this book! :)

  2. Teddy Says:

It would be hard to have a drawing out of that hat!

I really want this book. I’ve heard so much about it and it is a subject of interest to me.

I blogged about your giveaway here:
    http://teddyrose.blogspot.com/2009/02/this-weeks-giveaways-galore.html

  3. Rene Says:

Thanks for the heads up today! It was great to meet Jamie Ford and his wife. I can’t wait to read the book. I’m going to go start it now…

  4. katrinastonoff Says:

Cecilia: Yes, I do, and I LUURRRRRRVVVEEE him! Especially now. (Hint: get to know your local booksellers!)

Teddy: Thanks for the link! I’m trying to figure out how I’m going to return all those generous links without the unwieldy long list I was running toward the end of last year. Maybe blog rolling? Or posting one or two every week, on a rotating schedule? That would probably be more effective than the long list. I’d love to hear your input (email me: katrina at stonoff dot com).

Rene: You are going to LOVE it. It’s fabulous. And wasn’t he just the sweetest man? And I have a major crush on his wife too. *sigh* I’m such a fangirl.

  5. Jamie Says:

Hi Katrina! Hi Rene! It was great to meet you both–thanks for your support!

  6. katrinastonoff Says:

Jamie! What a delightful surprise! Does this mean you’re hoping to win an autographed copy of your own book? :-)

I plan to be there tomorrow night too, you know. Twenty-four hours from now, you’re going to wonder if I’m a stalker.

(I look at the time of my post and yours and … dare I hope you didn’t see my fangirl admission? Oh, well. I don’t think I have “cool” in me. And it shouldn’t come as a surprise anyway. You saw plenty of SQUEE!! this afternoon.)

  7. Margie Says:

I would love to win that book! I’ve read some good review on it.
Thanks again for the giveaway. Congrats to the winner this week.

  8. Kaye Says:

Congrats to S. Krishna. No need to enter me for Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet, I already have it. Just for the people who have not read it, it is a MUST read. Fabulous, as katrina says. I absolutely loved this book. You are so fortunate to have met Jamie and Leesha. If this book doesn’t make the best seller’s list, something is wrong.

  9. bermudaonion Says:

Congratulations to Swapna! Please enter me in your wonderful contest.

We can’t tell you how delightful it was to meet such a dedicated fan! Jamie was fully impressed when you whipped out his schedule on your pda! Now, reading your blog, I am fully appreciative that you stayed home with your wonderfully behaved and darling kids! We are so glad that David and Beverly greeted us with open arms and even asked us to bring more books for them to sell! What a treasure you have in their store! (Book ‘n’ Brush). Anyways, thanks to you, our afternoon was much more interesting and exciting!

  27. Sandra Leigh Says:

Oh, I think I wore that hat (well, not *that* hat – one like it.) to church on Easter Sunday, back in about 1957. It is pretty, isn’t it? And yes, that would make it vintage. Like me. Do sign me up, please!

  28. Alyce Says:

I really want to win this book! I tried to get it as an ARC but missed out.

  29. sabrina Says:

  31. Cindi Says:

What a wonderful time your had meeting this author and his wife! I enjoyed reading about their meeting and engagement! I like your veiled hat. You truly look good in any style of hat I have seen your in. Hats do not look very good on me! My niece looks cute in them! Please enter my name in your fabulous drawing for Jamie Ford’s book. I love the cover! Many thanks to you! Take care….. Cindi

  32. Lissa Says:

It sounds like you had such a wonderful time meeting Jamie & Leesha! No bitter only sweeet :) As for this weeks hat, there is no way I could pull that off, with the humidity here it would be pasted to my head! Thanks for another great book giveaway & Congrats to S. Krishna last weeks winner.

  33. Bridget Says:

I’ve posted on Win A Book. Interesting hat!

  34. kat magendie Says:

I always love seeing you in your hats! *smiling*

that book sounds interesting – hmm, maybe I should put my name in a hat ….or in the hat..whatever !*laughing*

  35. MJ Says:

I’d love to win this! (And I love the hat. I wish I had “known” you last year when I bought 50 hats at an auction for $5.00!! My kindergarten students had a blast choosing one.)

  36. katrinastonoff Says:

MJ: I GOTTA ask … what did you do with the 50 hats???? Please say you didn’t throw them away! (LOL — remember, they’re like kittens to me.)

Jamie and Leesha: ROFL — what, you didn’t recognize a stalker when you saw one? Hello! I had your schedule on my PDA! But yes, Book ‘N Brush is indeed a treasure, and David and Beverly are truly a gift to the community. I love small towns, but I’d have a very tough time living in a town that didn’t have a bookstore, and BnB is exemplary. They make a point of remembering customers and learning what we read and recommending books we may not have heard of otherwise. Readers in this community LOVE them!

Lace: I cannot imagine why we haven’t ALL already heard of this one. But we will, count on that. It WILL be a bestseller.

Janel: Leesha told me more details about their meeting, and I swear, every other thing I said was, “Oooooohh!” A fabulous, fabulous story. But I figured it was hers to tell. I hope she tells it some day. If she does, and I see it, you know I’ll link to it!

Sandra: ROFL!! I’m sitting in Starbucks because our internet is out again (SNOW! Can you believe it?!), and when I read your comment, I guffawed. Really loud. I slapped my hand over my mouth, but it only muffled the sound. And hey, who knows? Maybe it really WAS your hat.

Cindi: Thanks for the compliments. I also love the cover. On Jamie’s website (or maybe on his blog? Or Kristin’s?) there’s a post of the original cover, the one that went out on the ARCs. It was similar though less subtle. Both were stunning, but the one they eventually settled on was definitely the right one for this lovely, quiet book. (Hmmm … quiet only within its pages; the buzz it’s creating certainly isn’t quiet!)

    Lissa: Yes, definitely only sweet!

Yanno, I try not to comment on the Giveaway posts because it messes up my system for choosing a winner. But I couldn’t resist today! You guys are just too much fun to chat with. Oh well, if I choose me, I can always choose again, right?

  37. Brook Says:

I would love to win this book! It just sounds so good! I’m so glad you got to meet the author and his wife and you didn’t even have to go to Seattle to get it but that would also make for a totally awesome trip. Especially since didn’t you say it was going to be at the hotel itself? So you probably should go anyway. That would be great!
