Monday Book Giveaway (July 14, 2008)

By katrinastonoff

Congratulations to today’s winners: Debbie and Jessica! Debbie’s first choice was March, and Jessica’s was The Stone Diaries, so they both get first choice. That’s always fun! Congrats, both of you. If you’ll send your shipping information to katrina (at) stonoff (dot) com, I’ll get your books in the mail.

For next week, once again, YOU choose the book. Any book! Just comment below with the title and author of the book you want, before Sunday noon (Pacific Time), and I’ll choose a winner from one of my hats. I love these giveaways because I find all sorts of books I hadn’t heard of before. So — your choice, any book (readily available for $25 or less, not including shipping). Contest open to anyone with access to reliable mail service.

Come back Monday for a selection of Beach Reads.

Here’s the hat from which Mad Scientist chose the winners today. This time, because Tara requested it, I’ve taken a pic of me wearing it (one of those arms-length photos I’m not very good at!). This does, however, spoil my mom’s idea of reusing all the hats, with me wearing them.

I bought this hat at an antique store for the vintage hatbox it came in (one of these days, I’ll choose winners from that very cool box). It’s one of my older hats, though I don’t know from when (I’m guess 1920s to ’40s). I can’t tell you much about it because I’m working from McDonalds (my internet isn’t working right), and I forgot the hat. I’ll try to add some more details tonight. But it’s cloth, with a grosgrain ribbon. I love the color, especially since brown and aqua is hot right now (or maybe it was last year, but I’m milking this color combo for as long as I can!). This is one of favorite hats because it’s very much off-center and sassy, but without an in-your-face eccentricity. My jacket, however, is not actually the electric color it appears in the photo, and I can’t adjust it because my Photoshop colors need adjusting themselves. But it’s only the jacket that has over-saturated color. The hat is exactly as it appears here.

Big thanks to Books Love Me, Lori’s Reading Corner, Up for Grabs and all the bloggers who help promote the Monday Book Giveaway: A Contest Blog, A Striped Armchair, Ardently Book Reviews, Blog Giveaways, CallMeaBookworm, Fiction Scribe, In Spring It Is the Dawn, Juxtabook, Laura Williams’ Musings, Melody’s Reading Corner, Mom of 2 Dancers, My Friend Amy, My Weblog, Out of the Blue, Prize-a-Tron, Proud Bookworm, QuiverFullFamily, S. *Note: it is STILL Monday, and this on a summer day with both children home and a non-functional internet. See, I am not always late.

ETA: You guys are reading some fascinating books! All over the Dewey Decimal system, and most of them, I’d never heard of. What fun! Since I was looking them all up anyway, I added links to your comments, so everyone can check them out. Thanks for playing!

I know it’s an old one, but I’d love to read The Brothers Karamazov by Dostoevsky…
Congratulations to the lucky winners :)

[Edited to add: I just read this for the first time about three years ago. It was fabulous! But one hint for newcomers like me: keep a list of the characters, with all the different names they go by and a brief description. Russians use lots of different names, depending on the situation, and for half the book, my list was the only way I could keep the characters straight.]
