No-No November

By katrinastonoff

Well, it’s November already, and in this household, that means Nanowrimo! My husband calls it No-No November because it’s one month that I won’t do anything extra. I won’t go to lunch with you, or volunteer to bake cookies, or make routine appointments for the dentist, etc.

This year, I’m writing a novel called, Claire, Short for Clairvoyant, about a reluctant phone psychic trying to help a desperate caller find her missing boyfriend. If you’re interested, the first chapter (first draft!!) is posted here.

Wish me luck!

Wow, you are cruising! Good job.

I’m behind, but I’m just happy that I still have stuff to write about. My problem is getting down some of that in-between stuff that I didn’t really plan out in my head or on paper. I like to write from start to finish (even though I know stuff will change during the edit), and don’t really want to get ahead of my story just because I’m not sure how to get there. Hope that makes sense.

It makes perfect sense. I like to write from start to finish too. But when I don’t know something, I’ll often skip it (especially in a Word War). Like, for instance, I’m still calling the male lead “Not-Henry” (I think I’m going to call him Linus, but I haven’t committed yet). And there’s a nurse at a nursing home who I didn’t even know was in the book, and I’m calling him NAME, with a comment every time that says “gay male nurse,” in case I forget which unnamed character it is!

Sometimes, I even do that with a scene. I’ll just skip two lines, write TRANSITION, skip two more lines and go on.

I find I get some great stuff writing at breakneck pace, and I don’t want to slow it down. Plus, I’ve also found it’s super easy to fix those kinds of things later, when I know what the entire novel looks like.

I might have to try that, so I can focus on the scenes that are more vivid in my head, and then just make little notes so I don’t forget to go back and add stuff.

I went over and read the first chapter. Now I’m hooked, so KEEP WRITING :-)

    Seriously–have a good month.

Wow. Thanks! I’ve working on it. Halfway through the month and 60 percent of the way to a Nano win. But I don’t just want a Nano win, I want to finish the book! Still pushing though, and it’s still within my easy grasp as long as I keep going.
